3 Things to Remember if You’re Brand New to Copywriting

If you’re just starting out in copywriting, let me say this: welcome to the world of words that sell.

You’re in the right place, and no, you don’t need any prior experience to get started.

We get asked all the time if copywriting is something you can learn from scratch, and the short

answer is: 100% yes. Many successful copywriters (myself included!) started with zero

experience.

3-Things-to-Remember-If-You-are-Brand-New-to-Copywriting

But let’s dig a little deeper into what you need to know as you begin this journey. Grab your

coffee, and let’s chat about it.

1. Learning Something New Can Feel Weird—And That’s Okay

Think back to when you were a kid. You were constantly learning new things—riding a bike,

tying your shoes, maybe even the basics of multiplication. It felt natural to be clueless at first,

right?

As adults, though, it’s not every day we dive into something totally new. So when we do, it can

feel a little…awkward.

You might find yourself thinking, “Why don’t I get this right away?!” or “Why does that other

person seem ahead of me?”

Here’s the truth: learning takes time. Some concepts will click immediately, and others might

take a bit of practice. That’s normal! So be kind to yourself and remember—it’s okay to feel like

a beginner because, well, you are one.

2. Every Copywriter Starts Somewhere

Guess what? Every copywriter you admire was once exactly where you are—at square one, not

knowing anything about copywriting. Nobody’s born knowing how to write a killer headline or

craft a compelling call to action.

This is a process. And while you’ll get all the tools, tips, and support you need, it’s up to you to

put in the work. Practice is how you improve, and yes, it’s a mix of fun and frustration

sometimes. That’s just how it goes.

Remember, even the best copywriters were rookies once. So don’t be afraid to try, fail, and try

again. It’s part of the journey!

3. Don’t Compare Your Beginning to Someone Else’s Middle

This one’s huge: stop comparing yourself to other students or professionals. If someone’s been at

this longer than you, of course, they’re going to know more and maybe even have better results

right now.

You’re writing your own story, and it’s just starting. Comparing your “Chapter 1” to someone

else’s “Chapter 20” is a quick way to feel discouraged.

Instead, focus on learning at your own pace. Go through the lessons, practice, and get feedback.

And don’t worry if you feel unsure at first—that’s part of the process!

Give Yourself the Gift of Patience

Being new at something can feel uncomfortable, but that’s where growth happens. Be willing to

feel a little unsure of yourself, practice consistently, and trust that you’ll get there.
